Oncology

Diagnosis of cancer in your beloved pet can be a scary experience. The Oncology Service at VCA Animal Referral and Emergency Service is here to work with you and your family veterinarian to provide a better understanding of your dog or cat's disease process, and to provide hope with multiple treatment options. You don't have to go through this alone.

Our board-certified veterinary medical oncologist is able to provide the most advanced and comprehensive care and treatment options to strive for excellent quality of life for your loved one. Veterinary oncologists determine the most appropriate course of treatment and coordinate the treatment program for pets with cancer with various different services, ranging from surgery, internal medicine, and radiation oncology. Medical oncologists oversee the administration of chemotherapy. They also frequently serve as consultants to veterinarians in private practice to ensure that their patients receive the best treatment possible for their cancer.

Service Highlights

• Holistic approach to evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients. Quality of life and the welfare of your pet is our top priority.
• Consultation with multiple relevant specialists during your pet's visit for an integrated approach to cancer care.
• Compassionate care for pets with advanced or metastatic cancer, as well as formulation of custom palliative care treatment plans.
• Educating and empowering pet owners to be able to make decisions regarding their pet's disease.

Chemotherapy in Pets

Chemotherapy may be recommended if your pet has cancer which has shown evidence of spread, or if there is concern that this is likely to occur in the future. The goal of most chemotherapy is to kill cancer cells while still maintaining excellent quality of life. Thankfully, unlike humans undergoing chemotherapy, most of our patients (about 80% of dogs and 90% of cats) do not have significant side effects secondary to chemotherapy. Click here to read more.
