Sylke  Lohmann, Emergency Veterinarian

Dr. Sylke Lohmann graduated from St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. She is originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and grew up on a cattle and horse farm. After veterinary school, she began working at a mixed animal practice in rural Alberta prior to beginning her internship. Dr. Lohmann completed her rotating small animal internship at VCA West Los Angeles. During her internship, she developed a passion for surgery and pursued a small animal surgery specialty internship at the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center. She joined VCA Newark in July 2018 and was excited for the wide variety that emergency medicine involves. Dr. Lohmann has two small dogs, Izzy and Eva, and three cats: Shadow, Sanchez and Sterling. She enjoys yoga, hiking and dabbling in painting and other forms of art.

Why I do what I do: "Since I grew up on a farm, I was immersed in experiences with a variety of animals and formed special bonds with them. I have always felt most at ease with the honest nature of both small and large animals. I competitively rode Arabian horses in English and Western where I gained a tremendous respect for these beautiful creatures. After high school, I decided to become a Certified Veterinary Technician. I worked in the profession for a year and I decided to pursue becoming a veterinarian after the motivation from wonderful mentors. I thoroughly enjoy the wide variety that Emergency Medicine allows me to experience and I love all the wonderful animals I am allowed to spend my days with."
